- Sure, you connect to wifi and you’re on the internet! Boom!
- Yup, you type a website address in your browser to go to a different website!
- Yeah, you just text a message to your friend and click send…
- Wait… I thought that interweb thing was just a fad. You mean it’s still a thing?!
Why do I need to know how the internet works?
(Don’t we have techie people in the world to take care of those things when the internet doesn’t work?)
You need to understand the basics of how the internet works so you have some background knowledge to figure out if this random email you got from Amazon is legit… or a scammer trying to get you to click a link.
And, if you understand how websites work, you get a better sense of where things can get hijacked, leaving you vulnerable to online threats…
The internet is an interconnected network of networks. Blah, blah, blah.
Let’s see if we can explore how we get stuff online… without using too much technical jargon.
Sorry, we are going to have to use words like IP address and DNS server because, well, otherwise it’ll be hard to know where things go wrong in the next chapter…
